Mensen met een beperking vinden het vaak moeillijk om het openlijk over onderwerpen zoals intimiteit te hebben. Vaak heeft dit te maken met een combinatie van de normen en waarden in onze maatschappij en een laag zelfbeeld. Omdat hun lichaam anders is worden dit soort mensen vaak afgewezen, wat het heel moeilijk maakt om intieme relaties te vormen. Zelfs is het soms zo lastig dat mensen het idee krijgen dat ze alleen een realtie kunnen vormen met anderen die een beperking hebben. Dit leidt vaak tot een laag zelfbeeld: ze gaan geloven dat daten en intimiteit gewoon niet voor hun is weggelegd. Natuurlijk is dit helemaal niet waar. Je bent een ongeacht je beperking, maar dat is soms moeilijk om dat ook zelf te geloven en het kan heel moeilijk zijn om zelf de eerste stap te zetten. De opdracht was om een veilige omgeving te creëren waar mensen met een beperking hun verhalen op het gebied van liefde, daten en intimiteit kunnen kunnen delen met elkaar en erachter kunnen komen dat ze niet alleen zijn.
People with disabilities often have a hard time discussing the subject of intimacy. A lot of times this has to do with a combination of societal norms and low self worth. Because their bodies are different people can get put off, which makes it difficult for people with disabilities to form relationships. To the point that people with disabilities can get the idea that they will only be able to find a match with someone who also has a disability. This will often result in low self worth: they will start to believe that dating and intimacy is just not for them, despite their own needs. Of course these things are not true. People are people despite their disabilities and everyone has their own needs and preferences, but it’s a difficult to realise that own your own and to start a journey to find out about those kinds of things. The assignment was to create a save environment for, but not exclusive to people with disabilities, where they can share their stories and can find out they’re not alone.
Tijdens dit project heb ik veel nagedacht over toegankelijkheid. Zo heb ik een lettertype kunnen vinden die speciaal is ontworpen voor de leesbaarheid van slechtzienden, alle kleuren die in het design worden gebruikt door een contrastmeter gehaald en heb ik de schermen van mijn eindontwerp onder een speciale filter die kleurenblindheid nabootst gelegd.
During this project I focused a lot on accessibility. I was able to find a font face that is specifically designed to enhance readability for the visually impaired, made sure all the colours in my design have a high enough contrast, and I put my designs through a filter that mimics colourblindness.
